This is just a rumor and Lucasfilm has denied this, but rumors are swirling that J.J. Abrams (“Star Trek”) will drop out of “Star Wars Episode VII” to film “Star Trek 3”. Zachary Quinto recently said he could see Abrams directing the next Trek film and Abrams has always said being a huge Star Wars fan meant he was worried about the directing gig.

If this is true, is this a good or bad development for Star Wars?

J.J. Abrams is back with the highly anticipated sequel “Star Trek Into Darkness” starring Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and more. Does this one live up to the hype? Or do we have the first major misfire of the summer?

The Good

For those of you who enjoyed 2009’s “Star Trek”, “Star Trek Into Darkness” is bigger and better. From the opening to moments to the end, the film is filled with some great action scenes, of course, great special effects and some surprisingly effective emotional moments. Kirk and Spock’s relationship takes center stage in this film and it works really well. Of course, the humor is back but the biggest improvement for the sequel is Cumberbatch. Eric Bana just didn’t make a very interesting or menacing villain in the first Trek. That’s not the case here with Cumberbatch playing a cold, calculated and brilliant villain. The story is also very engaging and, at parts, very emotional, which is always a nice surprise for a summer blockbuster. And there’s a few reveals here that will please fans, but is accessible enough for non Trekkies.

The Bad

“Star Trek Into Darkness” may be one of my favorite Trek films, but it’s not without its flaws. The first is the story, while emotional and engaging, doesn’t really break any new ground. There a few surprises here and there, but for the most part fairly predictable. That’s not a huge deal, but part of what makes Star Trek so great to many fans is its willingness to try new things. I didn’t see anything new here. I also didn’t care for Alice Eve’s character. I understand why she was in the film, I just didn’t think she added much to the film emotionally, or was that important to be frank.

The Final Word

It’s still really early, but “Star Trek Into Darkness” is my favorite film of the summer so far. It’s exciting, emotional and a lot of fun. It may not go where no movie has gone before, but it’s still an enjoyable film.

It’s been a good first few weeks for the summer movie season. “Iron Man 3” had the second biggest opening weekend ever. “The Great Gatsby” exceeded expectations. Now that hot streak should continue with J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek Into Darkness” starring Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban and more. How big will it open?

Well opening tonight obviously will hurt its opening weekend. But this has turned into a must-see movie event. The first film opened to $79 million and while four years between films is a long time, it could have a similar effect like “The Matrix: Reloaded” had for pent up demand. It should be in line for a huge opening tonight/Thursday, earning at least $25-30 million. That momentum should carry it into the weekend. but opening a day early will prevent it from cracking $100 million this weekend. Still, an opening around $90 million is certainly possible. The big question will be how much will it earn in its entire domestic run? There’s a lot of competition this summer, starting next weekend with “Fast and Furious 6” and “The Hangover Part III”. Then there’s “After Earth” and “Man of Steel” not far on the horizon. That means unless this is universally loved as not just a great summer movie, but one of the best films of the decade, this film is going to make around the same total gross that the first film made, which would put it in the $280-290 million range.

Here’s a new trailer for “Star Trek Into Darkness” and it looks fantastic!

If there were some of you not excited for the sequel before, you should be now. From J.J. Abrams, now the director of “Star Wars Episode VII”, the film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Alice Eve and more.

Yep. According to Mark Wahlberg himself, he was almost in “Star Trek”. Who would he have played? In an interview, he said J.J. Abrams asked him to play Captain Kirk’s father, a role that went to Chris Hemsworth. Though he was only in the film at the start, it was a very memorable role, one that, along with ‘Thor”, helped kick start Hemsworth’s career.

Wahlberg said he couldn’t understand “the words of the dialogue or anything”.

I’m kind of glad he turned the role down. I love Wahlberg, but in roles like he had in “The Departed”, not for more emotional stuff.

Speaking of ST, “Star Trek Into Darkness” comes out this year and stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban and more.

J.J. Abrams other big science fiction franchise, “Star Trek”, is about to see ‘Star Trek Into Darkness” released in a couple months. The “Countdown to Darkness” comics are setting up the scene. The first issue introduced readers to Robert April, someone Trekkies should be familiar with. Now here’s some new revelations.

The first is that Kirk’s Enterprise was not the first Enterprise. In fact, Kirk says in the comic that April’s ship was decommissioned two years ago. Since he’s spent three years at the Academy, whatever happened to April, happened pretty recently.

The second revelation is that April has a connection to Carol Marcus. April said his first mate and best friend was Alex Marcus, Carol’s father. Sounds interesting! What do you guys think?

The sequel stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve and more.

Abrams talk “Star Trek”

With all the hoopla about “Star Wars Episode VII”, it’s easy to forget J.J. Abrams has a little movie called ‘Star Trek Into Darkness” coming out this year. Abrams recently spoke with MTV about the anticipated sequel.

Here’s what he had to say about the Klingons, who are in the sequel after being cut from the first film.

Their role in this is definitely that of adversary,” Abrams teased, “and you’ll see how that plays out.”

We know now that actress Alice Eve is playing Carol Marcus and will be a love interest to Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk, but Abrams said the film won’t slow down its pace for it.

“(Kirk) meets her fairly early on and again she plays a science officer, she’s someone who is a part of the adventure.  I think Chris is right, because it’s very much an action adventure movie and once that gets going it’s a very difficult thing to park the story. So it’s very difficult to do a romantic interlude. Her role is important, she wouldn’t be in the movie otherwise.”

The sequel stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.

Director J.J. Abrams has one big sci-fi epic coming out this year in “Star Trek: Into Darkness”. That film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban and more. Now, he’s directing “Star Wars Episode VII” and had this to say about his goal for the film (talking to the Huffington Post):

“I can just say what I want to do: I want to do the fans proud. I want to make sure the story is something that touches people. And we’re just getting started. I’m very excited.”

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Abrams said that he and Bradley Cooper had been talking about Cooper playing Lance Armstrong in an upcoming biopic. The film will be based on the upcoming book “Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong”.

“Star Trek: Into Darkness”, in true J.J. Abrams fashion, has a lot of mystery surrounding it. But the prequel comics, which will bridge the gap from the first film to the second film, may be revealing some big spoilers.

Movies.com’s John Gholson has an analysis of the first issue, which you can read here.

In it, Gholson said on the last panel, we see Robert April, the original captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise on an alien planet while allowing the alien species access to Starfleet technology. There was a report from Drew McWeeny who saw some information that made him advance a theory that Benedict Cumberbatch is indeed playing April. You can read that here.

The theory seems a bit out there, since April is really on the fringe of Star Trek canon. But you never know. Once you read Drew’s article, some of the bits from the trailer starts to make sense. Of course, so do the Gary Mitchell and Khan theories.

Anyways, what do you guys think? “Star Trek: Into Darkness” also stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto and more.
