Big things are coming

This blog is back and in a big way. Look for a podcast and coverage from the Las Vegas Comic Con a few weeks ago, including an interview with Veronica Taylor, voice of Ash from Pokémon, and from the Rose City Comic Con in September. Also, look for movie reviews and thoughts on movie and video game news.

He brings up a good point. Apparently Andrew Garfield had conversations with director Marc Webb. We know Mary Jane Watson won’t be in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” but what if MJ didn’t stand for Mary Jane?

“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” Garfield told EW. “And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”

Garfield went on to say that Michael B. Jordan from “The Wire” and “Friday Night Lights” would be a great candidate. I must say, it would be nice to see comic book films embrace that.

While promoting “The Newsroom” on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Jeff Daniels confirmed “Dumb and Dumber To” will shoot this fall. He also had this to say:  “I’ve seen the script. It’s hysterical. We’re middle-aged, we’re not pretending we aren’t. We’re middle-aged and we’re still that stupid.”

On one hand, I’m excited to see Daniels and Jim Carrey return. And Carrey usually doesn’t do sequels, so the fact he said yes to this is a good sign. But, when’s the last good film Bobby and Peter Farelly made?

Yep. A live action film based on “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” is coming from Sony. Producers Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford are on the film based on the TV series that saw (from IGN):  a group of young people who combine their special powers (The Planeteers) to summon Captain Planet, an environmental superhero, to battle the world’s worst eco-villains.

Tony Stark to sell HTC phones?

Not exactly. But Robert Downey Jr. will be. RDJ signed a $12 million contract to appear in upcoming ads for HTC. One would think that Iron Man would fit selling the HTC One, but plans are for RDJ to appear as himself. RDJ also signed a contract with Disney/Marvel to appear in “The Avengers 2” and “The Avengers 3”. He earned $50 million from “The Avengers”.

George Lucas (“Star Wars”) and Steven Spielberg (“War of the Worlds”, “Lincoln”) spoke at USC talking about the movie industry. And what they said wasn’t very encouraging to movie fans like me. As more and more studios make expensive, $200 million+  dollar blockbusters instead of smaller films, Spielberg said there will be  “an implosion where three or four or maybe even half a dozen of these mega-budgeted movies are going to go crashing into the ground.”

Lucas said going to the movies will be like going to a Broadway show, along with Broadway like prices of $150 or maybe even more.

“Everything else is going to look more like cable television on TiVo,” Lucas said.

That would be bad. I’m already nearly priced out of going to the movies as it is.

Yep, NBC’s “Community” lives on. Not really, but two of the actors from the series are in “Hot Tub Time Machine 2”. Gillian Jacobs has joined the cast for the female lead while Chevy Chase will return to his role as the repairman. Also, “Parks and Rec” star Adam Scott is the new leading man while Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke are also returning.

Remedy revealed footage from a new game titled Quantum Break.

Also revealed is a live action Halo TV series from 343 Industries and Steven Spielberg. What do you think? Are you excited?

Seth MacFarlane (“Ted”) hosted the Oscars and garnered a lot of strong reactions.  Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron asked MacFarlane to come back, but he declined on Twitter. It makes sense. He’ll be working on “A Million Ways to Die in the West” starring Neil Patrick Harris, Amanda Seyfried, Giovanni Ribisi, Charlize Theron and Liam Neeson.

Disney and Disney XD will be releasing a new TV series, hoping to continue the tradition from “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” with “Star Wars Rebels”. Here’s part of the press release:

Production has begun on Star Wars Rebels, an exciting, all-new animated television series based on one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. Scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, it will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.

Leading the development of the series is a creative team of exceptional talent. Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) is an executive producer on Star Wars Rebels and will write the premiere episode. He is joined by Dave Filoni as executive producer, who served as supervising director of the Emmy nominated Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2008. Executive producer Greg Weisman brings with him a wealth of animation experience with credits such as Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles.

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, “The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we’re thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD’s viewers.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president, Lucasfilm. “I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars.”

The action-filled series is set between the events of Episode III and IV — an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point.

Disney is of course releasing “Star Wars: Episode VII” with director J.J. Abrams at the helm.
