Big comic book movie news

For starters Alan Moore’s “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” is coming to Fox television. The graphic novel series has already been adapted into a terrible movie starring Sean Connery as Alan Quartermain. But Moore has famously hated any adaptations of his work, including “V for Vendetta” and “Watchmen”. Well he’s not likely to change his mind now because “Green Lantern” writer Michael Green will serve as writer and show runner.

In other comic book movie news, Vin Diesel (“Fast and Furious 6”) confirms he met with Marvel Studios about an unknown project:

“Marvel meeting today, Diesel writes. “Only the people in the room can tell you what was discussed…P.s. Thanks to Our page, for pushing to make it happen… you know I get tunnel vision with my work… and after that meeting today… wow!”

He also posted a photo of him in front of an Avengers comic cover featuring Giant Man. But he also once posted a photo of Vision, which me managed to include in this post. Could he join Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers 2”?

He’ll be back…and sooner than you think. Paramount announced a new “Terminator” film will be released June 26, 2015. But plans to call it “Terminator 5” might be premature as reports are that it will be the first film in a stand alone trilogy. Also, no mention of Arnold Schwarzenegger despite him saying he’d be back for the film. Though, that doesn’t mean he’s not returning. The big issue for this film is 2015 is a busy summer already with “The Avengers 2”, “Star Wars Episode VII”, “Pirates of the Caribbean 5” and “Independence Day 2”.

Tony Stark to sell HTC phones?

Not exactly. But Robert Downey Jr. will be. RDJ signed a $12 million contract to appear in upcoming ads for HTC. One would think that Iron Man would fit selling the HTC One, but plans are for RDJ to appear as himself. RDJ also signed a contract with Disney/Marvel to appear in “The Avengers 2” and “The Avengers 3”. He earned $50 million from “The Avengers”.

So some good news and possible bad news for Iron Man fans. “Iron Man 3” has earned more than a billion dollars worldwide already. But Robert Downey Jr. was in the middle of negotiations with Disney/Marvel to return as Tony Stark. Now comes news that he has a deal in place that will ensure his return in “The Avengers 2” and “The Avengers 3”. But back before IM3 came out Gwyneth Paltrow said she wasn’t sure there would be another stand alone Iron Man film. This news seems to support that cause as the contract is only for the Avengers sequels, not another Iron Man film. Are you OK with “Iron Man 3” from Shane Black being the send off to Tony’s stand alone films?

Bryan Singer has confirmed that Evan Peters will be playing Quicksilver in “X-Men: Days of Future Past”. If you’re confused, that’s likely because Joss Whedon said Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch would be in “The Avengers 2”. Marvel’s Kevin Feige explains how this can happen:

“There’s a specific arrangement with those two characters that would allow us to use them with ‘Avengers,’ but not discuss or reference their mutant or Magneto-related lineage. They can use them as mutants and as Magneto’s relatives, but cannot have anything to do with ‘The Avengers,” Feige told Super Hero Hype. Peters joins  Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Halle Berry, Daniel Cudmore, Fan Bingbing and Boo Boo Stewart.

Oh boy. “Iron Man 3” starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley isn’t even out yet, but we’re getting big news on “The Avengers 2”. Morris Chestnut (“Kick-Ass 2”) tweeted that the Black Panther may make his debut in the sequel. Obviously, since he tweeted it, one has to assume he’s up for the role. Are you excited about this?

Chris Hemsworth, brother of Liam Hemsworth who starred in “The Expandables 2” and most well known as Thor, said in a recent interview he’d like to see Jean-Claude Van Damme in “The Avengers 2”. Now JCVD has responded and said not only would he be up for a role, he has some ideas in mind: Silver Surfer and Doc Savage. First, in NO WAY could I see him as Silver Surfer. Second, the rights belong to Fox, not Disney and Marvel. Second, Doc Savage is only a slightly more realistic role I could see him in. I’d say someone like Punisher (Frank Castle) would be more suited for him, but I’d rather see Thomas Jane return to the role.

Shane Black’s “Iron Man 3” has some huge expectations. The first film after “The Avengers” and starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Kingsley, the film has teased epic battles and a lot of set pieces. Joss Whedon saw the film and reportedly asked afterwards “What am I supposed to do now? What am I going to do in “The Avengers 2″? ”

Not exactly the most promising quote. Hopefully it was self-deprecating humor.

Bad news for Hulk fans

For comic book fanboys, one detail in the latest “Iron Man 3” trailer sent them into a frenzy. There is an appearance of Tony Stark’s Hulkbuster armor, a suit built to control the Hulk. Since then, the web has buzzed about the potential of Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk, played now by Mark Ruffalo, would make an appearance in the anticipated sequel. Ruffalo, however, said that he won’t and that the next time we see the Hulk is in “The Avengers 2”. That’s too bad!

“Iron Man 3” stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and more.

We’re inching closer to “Iron Man 3”, which not only kicks off the summer movie season, but also Marvel’s Phase 2. Included in that is “Thor; Dark World”, “Captain America; The Winter Soldier” and “Guardians of the Galaxy”. Producer Kevin Feige sat down with SFX and shared some interesting details.

“I wouldn’t say that in a broad sense. The Thor film and the Guardians Of The Galaxy film certainly are cosmic. Guardians and Thor will take the brunt of the cosmic side of the universe, particularly Guardians, which is 95% in space. I think Iron Man 3 shows the other side of Phase 2, which is delving deeper into the characters. Throwing them on a much more personal journey. And Captain America will showcase… What’s exciting to me about Cap – sort of about Iron Man 3 too if you look at it – is it’s tonally almost like a different genre. Shane Black’s described Iron Man 3 as a Tom Clancy sort of political thriller, which I like a lot. We hired our directors on Cap because they loved our explanation that we really want to make a ’70s political thriller masquerading as a big superhero movie. Just like with the first film – we got Joe Johnston because we said, ‘We want to do a ’40s World War Two movie masquerading as a big superhero movie.’ I love that we’re doing a sequel to a film that’s a completely different genre than the first film. I think that’s fun. And the comics do it all the time.”

He also had some quotes on whether “Guardians of the Galaxy” would be as important as the other solo films for “The Avengers 2”.

“I would say that it does not. It’s much more of a standalone film. It takes place in the same universe. And when we’ve been on the other side of that universe in other movies, you might see those characteristics in Guardians, but the Avengers are not involved with what’s happening out there at this time.”

Sounds pretty interesting.
