Big comic book movie news

For starters Alan Moore’s “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” is coming to Fox television. The graphic novel series has already been adapted into a terrible movie starring Sean Connery as Alan Quartermain. But Moore has famously hated any adaptations of his work, including “V for Vendetta” and “Watchmen”. Well he’s not likely to change his mind now because “Green Lantern” writer Michael Green will serve as writer and show runner.

In other comic book movie news, Vin Diesel (“Fast and Furious 6”) confirms he met with Marvel Studios about an unknown project:

“Marvel meeting today, Diesel writes. “Only the people in the room can tell you what was discussed…P.s. Thanks to Our page, for pushing to make it happen… you know I get tunnel vision with my work… and after that meeting today… wow!”

He also posted a photo of him in front of an Avengers comic cover featuring Giant Man. But he also once posted a photo of Vision, which me managed to include in this post. Could he join Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers 2”?

Vin Diesel already starred in “Fast and Furious 6” and is returning to the world of Riddick with “Riddick”. But could he also join the Marvel film universe? Diesel tweeted that he was taking a meeting with Marvel, but didn’t know what for. Now before “The Avengers” came out from Joss Whedon, there were rumors that Diesel would play Vision. Then there were rumors he’d play Vision in Edgar Wright’s “Ant-Man”. But, and this might be wishful thinking, wouldn’t it be cool if he played Kingpin in a DareDevil remake?

This seems a bit quick, but “Fast and Furious 6” directed by Justin Lin is seeing its sequel, “Fast and Furious 7” from James Wan being released next year. Reports are that Warner Brothers wants a “Man of Steel” sequel, which has earned $125.1 million already, to come out in 2014 with a “Justice League” film to follow in 2015. It makes a little bit of sense because WB has slated a 2015 release for a JLA film for a while now. But that’s not much time for Zack Snyder and writer David Goyer to prep a script and get everything done in time.

Here’s the international trailer for “Riddick”. The first half the trailer is about the same as the last trailer, but the second half has new footage.

The film stars Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Jordi Molla, Matt Nable, Katee Sackhoff, Bokeem Woodbine, Dave Bautista, Conrad Pla, Raoul Trujillo, Nolan Funk and Keri Hilson.

Well, not really. But Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has taken over the box office world. You think I’m kidding? EW pointed this out: Take a look at the last 16 weeks. There has been a movie starring Johnson in the top 10 every week since Feb. 22. It started with “Snitch” and most recently continued with “Fast and Furious 6”, which co-stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Luke Evans and more:

Feb. 22-24 – Snitch (No. 2)
Mar. 1-3 – Snitch (No. 4)
Mar. 8-10 – Snitch (No. 5)
Mar. 15-17 – Snitch (No. 6)
Mar. 22-24 – Snitch (No. 10)
Mar. 29-31 – G.I. Joe: Retaliation (No. 1)
Apr. 5-7 – G.I. Joe: Retaliation (No. 2)
Apr. 12-14 – G.I. Joe: Retaliation (No. 4)
Apr. 19-21 – G.I. Joe: Retaliation (No. 5)
Apr. 26-28 – Pain & Gain (No. 1), G.I. Joe: Retaliation (No. 6)
May 3-5 – Pain & Gain (No. 2)
May 10-12 – Pain & Gain (No. 3)
May 17-19 – Pain & Gain (No. 4)
May 24-26 – Fast & Furious 6 (No. 1)
June 1-3 – Fast & Furious 6 (No. 1)
June 7-9 – Fast & Furious 6 (No. 2)

His last three movies have reached No. one at the box office for its opening weekend and combined, his 2013 movies have earned $956 million. And I thought Channing Tatum had a good 2012. This puts that to shame. Also, Johnson hosts the TNT show “The Hero”.

With all the video game news going on because of E3, it’ll be a slow day for movie news. But here’s a small piece. Production on “Hercules” from director Brett Ratner (“Rush Hour”, “X-Men: The Last Stand) has officially started. The film’s based on a graphic novel and stars Dwayne Johnson (“Fast and Furious 6).

The surprises keep coming this summer movie season. “The Purge” defied all expectations, opening to $36.4 million, the film was made for just $3 million. Expect this film to drop off quickly as horror movies tend to be very front loaded, but the movie has a chance to wind up north of $70-80 million total now.

“Fast and Furious 6” and “Now You See Me” each earned just less than $20 million. “FF 6” should pass “Fast Five” by next week to become the highest grossing film in the franchise.

“The Internship” starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn debuted to a disappointing fourth, earning $18.1 million.

The first weekend in June is here. Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn finally reunite after “Wedding Crashers” with “The Internship” while Ethan Hawke returns to horror after “Sinister” with “The Purge”. Can either knock off “Fast and Furious 6” from the top spot?

After “Wedding Crashers” earned $209 million in 2005, a team up with Wilson and Vaughn seemed like a sure fire hit. Eight years later, however, and “The Internship” looks bad. It looks dated, is surprisingly light on laughs and…well…feels like it should have come out in 2006. Still, viewers might be willing to give this a shot, especially with “The Hangover Part III” disappointing a lot of fans, but this one will struggle to break $20 million.

Opening weekend: $15-20 million

That would open the door for “The Purge” where a family must fight off home invaders during a 12-hour period when crime is legal. Hawke scored a hit with “Sinister”. And this film seems a bit like “The Strangers” but on a larger scale. That film opened to a little over $20 million and there’s no reason this shouldn’t beat it because of price inflation and should take the top spot this weekend.

Opening weekend: $20-25 million

“Fast and Furious 6” is on its way to becoming the highest grossing film domestically and internationally in the hit franchise. The film set an opening weekend record for Universal when it opened to $97 million. The film has now crossed $500 million, the fastest to reach that mark in Universal history. The film stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Paul Walker, Luke Evans and more. Justin Lin directed.

Uh oh. “A Prophet”, the French crime film from 2009 is one of the best crime movies I’ve ever seen. Starring Tahar Rahim, the film is is simply amazing. Now Hollywood is remaking it. It gets worse. Neal Moritz is producing. Yes, the same producer who brought us “Total Recall”, “Fast and Furious 6”, “Jack the Giant Slayer” and more. Look, I enjoyed some of those films, but they were mindless action films, something “A Prophet” most definitely isn’t. No word on any directors or actors, but let’s hope Moritz pulls a rabbit out of his hat and gets someone really good to helm the project.
