DiCaprio, De Niro tackling JFK assassination

There’s a JFK assassination movie coming. And the best news is Oliver Stone isn’t directing it. Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Great Gatsby”) and Robert De Niro are set to star in “Legacy of Secrets” based on the book of the same name. The book follows the saga of FBI informant Jack Van Laningham. DeNiro would play Mafia kingpin Carlos Marcello, who confided to Van Langingham that he ordered the hit on Kennedy.

David O. Russell (“Silver Linings Playbook”) is writing and will direct the film.

Box office battle: 4/26/13

The last weekend before the summer movie season kicks into high gear. Michael Bay does a low budget film (by his standards) with “Pain & Gain” while “The Big Wedding” looks to offer counter programming.

Starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, “Pain & Gain” will be taking the top spot this weekend. Wahlberg and Johnson have done plenty of comedy and action and have a large number of fans so this seems like a sure bet. But though it’s based on a true story, the marketing hasn’t made it clear whether this is supposed to be more of a comedy, a thriller with comedic elements, an action movie with thriller and comedic elements or what. Also with “Iron Man 3” just around the corner, it’ll keep enough audiences waiting for that film to limit this film’s opening weekend.

Opening weekend: $30-35 million

“The Big Wedding” stars Robert De Niro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton and Amanda Seyfried. But audience anticipation is just so-so. Not to mention Heigl has seen her career take a big down turn after “Knocked Up” with lots of bombs lately. This one won’t find much of an audience.

Opening weekend: $5-10 million

Robert De Niro joins boxing film

Robert De Niro is in part responsible for perhaps the greatest boxing film (sorry “Rocky”) ever…”Raging Bull”. Now he’s returning to the genre in “Hands of Stone”. He’ll take over the role that was attached to Al Pacino at one point, playing trainer Ray Arcel. Edgar Ramriez, who was last seen in “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Wrath of the Titans” will play boxer Roberto Duran, who quit in the middle of a much hyped fight against Sugar Ray Leonard.

Oscars 2013: Best Picture

Here’s the big one. The nine nominees are: “Lincoln”, “Amour”, “Beasts of the Southern Wild”, “Argo”, “Zero Dark Thirty”, “Django Unchained”, “Silver Linings Playbook”, “Les Miserables” and “Life of Pi”.

This is another wide open category. To me, this comes down to “Argo” and “Lincoln”. I’m giving it to “Argo”. I think the Academy will do this partly because the film has won pretty much every big award and they might be regretting snubbing Ben Affleck. Then again, maybe this is a big day for Steven Spielberg and company and they want to honor one of the nation’s greatest Presidents. But don’t be surprised if “Amour”, “Silver Linings Playbook” or “Les Miserables” wins the award too. that will depend on if any of the films gains momentum in the other categories. For example, if SLP wins Best Supporting Actor or Actress (Robert De Niro or Jacki Weaver), Best Actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and Best Director (David O. Russell), this should be a shoo in to win. That being said if Les Miserables wins Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway) and an upset is pulled in Best Actor (Hugh Jackman) perhaps this will be a big night for that film. And don’t forget “Amour”. If Emmanuelle Riva upsets Lawrence in Best Actress, this could be a big night for that film as well.

Oscars 2013: Best Supporting Actor

Ok now we’re in crunch time for the Oscars. Today, I’m looking at the Best Supporting Actor race. Out of any category, this one appears to be the most wide open. The nominees are: Tommy Lee Jones for “Lincoln”, Robert De Niro for “Silver Linings Playbook”, Alan Arkin for “Argo”, Philip Seymour Hoffman for “The Master” and Christoph Waltz for “Django Unchained”. Every single one of these nominees have won an Oscar before, so there’s no chance of someone getting a “we owe you” Oscar this year. It’s safe to put Hoffman on the not going to win list. “The Master” just lacked the buzz this year after it’s release. Waltz won the Golden Globe, though personally, I hope he doesn’t win. I still think Leonardo DiCaprio was the more deserving actor from that film to be in this category. But he has to be considered one of the front runners. My dark horse is Arkin. The big question is with “Argo” gaining all this momentum because of Ben Affleck getting snubbed, will that carry into other categories, or just Best Picture? Arkin, of course, could sneak past the other nominees if the Academy gives in to the film’s momentum.

De Niro gives an absolutely great performance in “Silver Linings Playbook”. I just get the feeling that film is going to get largely overlooked, aside from perhaps Jennifer Lawrence. My pick is Jones in “Lincoln”. Let me put it to you this way: Daniel Day-Lewis is considered a lock for Best Actor. And for me Jones was much more memorable. End of story.

My initial thoughts:

I wish they would have nominated 10 films for Best Picture. A film like “Cloud Atlas” or “Moonrise Kingdom” really deserved to get recognized. Looks like Joaquin Phoenix’s little Oscar rant didn’t cost him a nomination after all. Stay tuned here in the coming days for predictions of all the categories!

A few surprises. Mainly, Nicole Kidman for “The Paperboy”. Javier Bardem looks like he’s going to get some Oscar love. And not really a surprise, but I was hoping “Cloud Atlas” would sneak in here somehow.

“Jackie Brown” prequel casts another role

This was possibly the strangest and one of the most ill-advised films to begin its track toward the silver screen. “Switch”, which will be a prequel to Quentin Tarantino’s “Jackie Brown’ began casting. John Hawkes and Yasiin Bey will play Louis Gara and Ordell Robbie, who were played by Robert De Niro and Samuel L. Jackson in the original. Now, Isla Fisher is in talks to play Melanie, who was played by Jane Fonda in the original. This casting is a bit weird because this film will take place 15 years before “Jackie Brown” and yet…Fisher is older than Fonda was when “Jackie Brown” was made. Anyways, Dennis Quaid is no longer involved, but Ty Burrell and Jennifer Aniston are, although their roles haven’t been revealed yet.

Dan Schechter is writing and directing and according to CinemaBlend, the film sees Ordell and Louis become involved in a plot to kidnap a real estate developer’s wife (Aniston). When the husband refuses to pay, however, the wife and the criminals devise a plan to get revenge.

“Heat” remake gets a new director

Jason Statham is already set to star in the remake of “Heat”. But, don’t worry. This isn’t a remake of the Michael Mann film that saw Robert De Niro and Al Pacino together for one intense scene. No, this will be a remake of the 1986 Burt Reynolds film. Simon West (“Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life”) is set to take over as director. The film is written by William Goldman, who wrote the original film. Goldman also is the writer of “The Princess Bride”, “All the President’s Men” and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”.

“Silver Linings Playbook” wins People’s Choice Award at TIFF

There were fantastic premieres (“Cloud Atlas”) highly anticipated films (“The Master”, “Argo”) and more, but David Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook” took home the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The film stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver. And, it may bode well for the film. Four of the films that won the award have won Best Picture at the Oscars, including “Slumdog Millionaire” and “The King’s Speech”, so this may be the start of a special run for the film. Ben Affleck’s “Argo” was the runner up.
