J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: Episode VII” may just now be filming, but some big news has come out about “Episode VIII”. Rian Johnson (“Looper”) will direct the installment!

Johnson joins Gareth Edwards (“Godzilla”) and Josh Trank (“Chronicle”) as the other directors joining the universe.

“Chronicle” was one of the surprise hits of last year. Since then director Josh Trank has been busy, most notably taking the “Fantastic Four” reboot. But now comes news that Trank and screenwriter Max Landis won’t be involved in the sequel! That’s bad news for the film. I would have loved to see their vision continue.

Chris Evans is busy as Marvel’s Captain America, but it wasn’t so long ago he was Johnny Storm/The human torch in “Fantastic Four” and “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer”. Now the reboot is coming from “Chronicle” director Josh Trank. And we may have our Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, played by Jessica Alba in the previous films. Allison Williams, who stars on HBO’s “Girls” is apparently in the early stages of negotiations. What do you think of the choice?

News on “Fantastic Four” reboot

Here’s some news on the upcoming “Fantastic Four” reboot coming from “Chronicle” director Josh Trank. According to The Hollywood Reporter the film will have a ” “grounded superhero and sci-fi approach to the heroes and will tap deep into the comics mythology, which featured not just the better-known villains such as Doctor Doom and Galactus but also alien races the Kree and the Skrull, and the anti-matter universe known as the Negative Zone.”

Looks like we’re getting an expanded universe in the FF too. The original films starred Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and more. Hopefully they get Doom right.

So Matthew Vaughn’s surprising departure from ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past” led many to believe it was he who would direct “Star Wars Episode VII”. That gig went to J.J. Abrams. But now news comes that Vaughn has joined the “Fantastic Four” reboot as a producer and will work with Josh Trank (“Chronicle”) as the film preps for a 2015 release. Hopefully it won’t be as bad as the one with Jessica Alba. And with Trank, a talented young director, Mark Millar and Vaughn in the same corner, this one has a lot of talent behind it. Speaking of X-Men, Bryan Singer teased that Jean Grey and Cyclops could be back, despite dying in “X-Men: The Last Stand”.

It looks like that’s what Fox’s consultant Mark Millar wants you to think. In an interview with SciFiNow, Millar had this to say about the upcoming reboot, which is being directed by Josh Trank (“Chronicle”):

“Chronicle, if you think about it, was similar to Fantastic Four in that it was a bunch of people who were transformed into something more than human – that turned out almost his calling card to come and do something like Fantastic Four.

“What I wasn’t expecting actually was just how funny and likeable he could make this as well as getting the more awesome moments on screen – I use awesome in the traditional British sense and not the California sense awesome, you know? The Ridley Scott moments, and the Fantastic Four really are jaw-dropping in the same way you feel when you saw Alien for the first time. There’s some moments in this – not to be specific – that are actually gonna be phenomenal on screen and stuff you haven’t seen in a superhero movie before.”

No word on casting yet. The first two “Fantastic Four” movies, which starred Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis and more were painfully corny and a wasted opportunity, Hopefully Trank is up to the task for a big budget adaptation.

“FF” reboot gets release date

Josh Trank’s (“Chronicle”) “Fantastic Four” reboot will hit theaters March 6, 2015. Mark Millar is overseeing all of Fox’s properties when it comes to comics. No casting has been announced. Though, just throwing a name out there, I’d love to see Mark Strong as Dr. Doom.

Yes, Fox has come to a decision. Despite offers to extend the deadline if it could use Galactus and Silver Surfer, Marvel Studios will get the rights to Daredevil instead. Fox has decided to let that expire and focus on rebooting Fantastic Four, which director Josh Trank has been rumored for. The studio also has seen the rights to the Punisher and Blade return to them in previous years.

With “The Amazing Spider-Man” doing decent business, Sony is thinking about the sequel, which it announced to be coming out summer 2014. What was unsure was whether director Marc Webb (“500 Days of Summer”) would return. Sony is willing to let him back in the chair, if he signs a two-picture contract, something not normal for directors. “The Amazing Spider-Man” starred Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield as Gwen Stacey and Peter Parker, but received mixed reviews.

Do you think Webb is a necessity for the series? There seemed to be a lot of scenes from the trailer that didn’t make the final cut of the movie, leading me to believe Webb lost some sort of editing battle. But, I’m not sure Webb is cut out to handle the spectacle and action part of a summer blockbuster. Instead of having Josh Trank do a Venom movie, why not let him have a crack at Spidey?

Since “Chronicle” was a surprise hit, director Josh Trank has been a hot commodity. He’s attached to the “Venom” movie, the “Fantastic Four” reboot, “Shadow of the Colossus” and “The Red Star”. Looks like he may have bitten off more than he can chew. With Fox scrambling to get “Daredevil” into production so its rights don’t revert back to Marvel in the fall and the studio already gearing up to film “X-Men: First Class 2”, the earliest Trank’s “Fantastic Four” reboot would film would be the second half of next year. Warner Brothers hopes to have “The Red Star” in theaters in 2014, meaning that film would have to film at some point in 2013 as well. Either Trank is going to have to have an abbreviated post production process, or if there’s any delays at all, he could have to choose between projects. Which comic would you rather see him take?
