The tragic death of director Tony Scott last year would seem to have put plans for a “Top Gun” sequel on hold. But that’s not the case according to Jerry Bruckheimer (“Pirates of the Caribbean”).

“For 30 years we’ve been trying to make a sequel and we’re not going to stop. We still want to do it with Tom [Cruise] and Paramount are still interested in making it,” Bruckheimer told Deadline.

Bruckheimer also said Tom Cruise is still passionate about a “Top Gun 2”. Are you?

My thoughts on Tony Scott

I purposely waited before posting anything about Tony Scott’s apparent suicide. Stories like these, details, some true and some false, always fly out onto the web. I’m not going to comment on his suicide out of respect. But, I will say this. Scott directed some really enjoyable action films. Anyone who has seen “Top Gun” knows this. But, even his most recent films with Denzel Washington, including “Unstoppable”, “The Taking of Pelham 123” and “Deja Vu” were all very tense and a heck of a ride. He’s worked with numerous stars from Tom Cruise, who was prepping “Top Gun 2” with before his death to Keira Knightley. Scott’s frantic style will be missed and it’s truly sad to see someone feel so hopeless that this is what they feel is their only way out.

Tom Cruise is one busy man. He’s in the upcoming “Rock of Ages”. He also is filming “Oblivion” is in talks for “Top Gun 2” and will team up with Robert Downey Jr. for “El Presidente”. He’s also attached to the reboot of “Van Helsing”. Well, you can add another project to his list: A remake of the classic “The Magnificent Seven”, which itself is a remake of the classic “Seven Samurai”.

Now, this won’t happen for a while given his busy schedule, but this supposedly has been high on his list. I do hope they get other A-list actors to surround him with.

Tom Cruise has had one wild career. From superstar in “Jerry Maguire” to his more…um…wild stunts before his films like “War of the Worlds”. But, with the latest “Mission Impossible” it seemed his career is getting back on track. “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” was both a commercial and critical success. And its sequel was fast tracked. But apparently not that fast. Adam Goodman, who works for Paramount, said that “Top Gun 2” would film before the next “Mission Impossible” with Tony Scott directing.

Of course. Make the sequel no one wants before the sequel that people actually do want to see. What madness is this? It’s almost like if Robert Rodriguez ignored “Sin City 2” for years making films like “Shorts”, “Planet Terror” and “Spy Kids 4”. Oh yeah. That happened.
