Two big movies are hitting theaters tomorrow. One a sure-fire family hit, the other a big budget western blockbuster. How well will they do?

“Monsters University” may have taken the top spot the past two weekends, but this is the first summer in a long while that another studio is going to smash them for the top spot in terms of animated films. Universal’s “Despicable Me 2” sees Steve Carell return to voice Gru and the minions are back in full force. The first film earned more than $250 million. And with no major animated films coming out (sorry “Turbo) this is going to at least exceed that by a little bit. Expect a monstrous first week.

Opening week: $110-120 million.

Armie Hamer and Johnny Depp star in “The Lone Ranger”, the big budget film that reunites Depp with “Pirates of the Caribbean” director Gore Verbinski. Disney’s playing up that angle a lot, but it has a lot going against it. First, the last Western film to open over the July 4 holiday? “Wild Wild West”. And while “True Grit” was very successful, earning $171 million domestically, that was an Oscar contender and had Jeff Bridges. The last summer Western films have been utter failures with “Cowboys and Aliens” and “Jonah Hex”. With a lot of competition for the young male crowd, this film won’t reach the heights Disney was hoping. In fact, it likely won’t earn as much as”True Grit” after it’s all said and done.

Opening week: $70-80 million

Armie Hammer is…Ant-Man?

Well…if you believe Armie Hammer himself, the answer is no. But rumors are flying after he was spotted on the set of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”. Rumors then started that he had visited the set with Edgar Wright (“Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”), who is of course directing the Marvel film. But Hammer denied even knowing who Wright was and said he visited the set to see a friend. Sounds…suspicious. Anyway, the other big rumor was that Nathan Fillion was up for the role, though he’s repeatedly denied that. If it was one of these two actors, who would you prefer? Hammer can next be seen in “The Lone Ranger” with Johnny Depp.

I can’t wait for this film. Scarlett Johansson has joined “Her” from director Spike Jonze (“Where The WIld Things Are”). From firstshowing.net:

Her is about Theodore, a lonely writer purchases a newly developed operating system (not unlike iPhone’s Siri) designed to meet the user’s every needs. To Theodore’s surprise, a romantic relationship develops between him and his operating system. This unconventional love story blends science fiction and romance in a sweet tale that explores the nature of love and the ways that technology isolates and connects us all.

The film also stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams and Rooney Mara. Johansson will voice the operating system.

Some good and bad casting news

One of these pieces of casting news has me genuinely excited. The other…well…you’ll see.

First the good news. Rooney Mara has garnered pretty much all the attention thanks to roles in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “The Social Network”, but now it looks like her sister Kate Mara will get her chance to shine. Kate’s had some smaller roles in “127 Hours” and “We Are Marshall”. Now comes news that she’s joining the cast of “Transcendence”, the debut directorial effort of Wally Pfister, who is the long time collaborator with Christopher Nolan. The film stars Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall and Paul Bettany so this one seems to be loaded with potential.

On for the bad news. Anyone see ‘The Last Airbender” from M. Night Shyamalan? Don’t worry, there’s not a sequel coming, though there is still that possibility. But I digress. Do you remember Katara played by Nicola Peltz? Even if you don’t, my point is everyone in that film did a terrible job acting. Now Peltz is set for a starring role in another big adaptation. Are you ready? She’s in “Transformers 4”. She’ll star along side Jack Reynor and join the likes of Megan Fox and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as the female leads for Michael Bay to look at in the series. Word of advice to Peltz. After working on one of the worst films made in recent memory, don’t use Bay as your “comeback” attempt.

Big actors join “Midnight Sun”

This could turn out to be one of the more intriguing films to watch. Jessie Eisenberg, Diane Kruger and Emile Hirsch have joined the film “Midnight Sun”, which is set in the 1940s and will be an atomic bomb drama. The film centers around two recent graduates (Eisenberg and Hirsch) who are hired to work on a secret project in New Mexico. With one of their wives in tow (Kruger), the group ditches its free-wheeling, jazz-heavy New York past and heads west to live with a secret desert community of scientists.

Sounds like this can go one of two ways. Ethical or more horror. Should be interesting. Eisenberg and Hirsch haven’t really truly broken out like I think a lot of people thought after their respective breakout roles (Eisenberg in “The Social Network” and Hirsch in “Into the Wild”. But this could help change that.

Ashton Kutcher’s film about Steve Jobs, titled “Jobs” is reportedly close to a distribution deal with Open Road films. The film will make its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Of course, Aaron Sorkin is working on a Johs biopic as well, which is said to have just three 30-minute scenes.

Aaron Sorkin (“The Social Network”, TV’s “The Newsroom”) will have an unconventional approach to his Steve Jobs biopic. How unconventional? If he has his way, the film will have three scenes in real time. That’s it.

“[T]his entire movie is going to be three scenes,” Sorkin told the Daily Beast, “and three scenes only. That all take place in real time… There will be no time cuts and each will take place before a product launch. Backstage before a product launch. The first one being the Mac, the second one being NeXT after he had left Apple and the third one being the iPod.”

It certainly would be unique. Of course, they’d have to be very long scenes to fill out a feature length film.

David Fincher wants Brad Pitt

Director David Fincher (“The Social Network”) is technically on hold by Disney with his “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” adaptation. But that doesn’t doesn’t stop Fincher from looking for a leading man. Reports are that Brad Pitt (“Killing Them Softly”) is the actor Fincher is going after. This would be a great pair and an interesting adaptation. Here’s hoping Disney green lights the film soon.

That’s right. David Fincher (“The Social Network”, “Fight Club”) is turning to Kickstarter to help fund a demo reel for a film he is producing entitled “Goon”. Clancy Brown and Paul Giamatti are voicing the main characters. The pitch they have on the page (which you can see here) looks pretty cool. And they do have some good incentives, including signed collectibles. Check it out and see if you’ll become a backer!

Well, the one thing we know about WB’s upcoming “Justice League” movie is that we know nothing at all. Now that Christopher Nolan has said no, we’ve heard everything from Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” starting to set up a shared universe to Ben Affleck on board to direct (he’s not) to having two sets of Superman and Batman actors, one for the JL movie and one for the individual films to Joseph Gordon-Levitt taking over the mantle (maybe). The list of directors reportedly includes the Wachowskis (I hope that one is true). But, here’s another one for you. Armie Hammer is reportedly under consideration to play Batman/Bruce Wayne in the JL movie. This isn’t the first time his name was brought out. He was supposed to star in a JL movie as Batman when George Miller was attached. Since then, Hammer’s had a breakout role in “The Social Network” and is starring along side Johnny Depp in “The Lone Ranger”.
