Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” was a box office smash, even though it wasn’t all that great. But Disney of course is making a sequel called “Into the Looking Glass”. The sequel brings back Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Here’s the surprising news. Burton isn’t coming back. Instead, James Bobin (“The Muppets”, “The Mupets…Again!”) will helm the sequel.

This is getting confusing. “The Muppets…Again!” won’t have Amy Adams or Jason Segal involved. It does star Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, Tina Fey and Ray Liotta (?) are in. Christoph Waltz was in, but then was replaced. Turns our Gervais revealed that Waltz will still appear in the film. That’s good news, even if it’s just a cameo, but the casting news is getting as confusing as “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”.

Well, I don’t know about big, but it’s pretty significant. Reports are that Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog will be tying the knot in “The Muppets…Again!”. Now this is where things get fishy. Technically speaking, the pair got married in “Muppets Take Manhattan”, though in “interviews” Kermit has denied this. The anticipated sequel also stars Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey.

Muppets sequel gets a title!

“The Muppets” was really one of my favorite films of 2011. It was funny, charming and Jason Segal and Amy Adams were great. They’re not returning, but Kermit, Miss Piggy and company are in the newly titled “The Muppets…Again!”

The sequel stars Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey, Ty Burrell and James Bobin returning to direct. Also, more good news, Flight of the Conchords’ Bret McKenzie is returning to write some of the songs. He won an Oscar for “Man or Muppet”.

“The Muppets” starring Jason Segal and Amy Adams was one of my favorite films of 2011. But for “The Muppets 2” we’re getting a new cast of humans to join Kermit, Miss Piggy and company. Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and Ty Burrell have already signed on. And now an actor who appeared in “Muppets in Space” is coming back. Ray Liotta. Yep. So this past week Liotta has joined a children’s movie and “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”. Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum!

“The Muppets”, which starred Jason Segal and Amy Adams in the human roles along side Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog and company was one of the pleasant surprises in 2011. Now, the sequel appears to be grabbing some top notch talent. Ty Burrell is playing an inspector and Ricky Gervais is playing one of the leads. Tina Fey is joining the sequel in the female lead, playing a Russian gulag prison guard.

“The Muppets” was a big surprise for me. Starring Jason Segal, Amy Adams, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and company it was a great film. Then news came that Segal wouldn’t return and that Christoph Waltz had left the sequel. But now that Ty Burrell is on board and news that Ricky Gervais is joining makes me a whole lot more confident in the film again. Gervais is extremely funny and I think he can bring a new brand of humor as well.

Good news for the Muppets sequel

“The Muppets” was the most pleasant surprise from last year, earning critical acclaim, becoming successful at the box office and winning an Oscar. Now, after Jason Segal opted not to return for “The Muppets 2”, some bit of good news.  James Bobin and screenwriter Nicholas Stoller are back. Christoph Waltz will co-star with Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest of the gang. And now, Bret McKenzie , from Flight of the Conchords will write the songs again!

It looks like Segal is the only major player who isn’t returning.

Yes, first the the Muppets stormed back into theaters last year. Now, some more famous puppets are making their way to the big screen. Shaun Levy (“Real Steel”) will produce a “Sesame Street” feature film for Fox. Normally, I would have a great deal of skepticism about a project like this, but “The Muppets” turned out so well, why couldn’t Big Bird, the Cookie Monster, Elmo, Bert and Ernie and the rest of the gang have a similarly great film?

Yes, Katherine Heigl (Knocked Up) is officially listed on the cast list for “The Happytime Murders”. The film is set to be a noir film, filled with murder, deceit and love. Oh yeah, and it has puppets. Really.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In a world where puppets co-exist with humans as second class citizens, puppet private eye and disgraced ex-cop, Phil Phillips, is hot on the trail of the serial killer who murdered his brother and is now targeting the cast members of the famous 80s television show, “The Happytime Gang.” As the killings continue, Phil’s former flame, Jenny, is next on the list. It’s up to Phil and his ex-partner, Detective Edwards, to find the culprit, but as bad blood and old resentments resurface the clues start pointing to the only viable suspect, Phil himself. Now he’s on the run with only his wits and hard headed determination, as he tries to solve, “The Happytime Murders.”

I’m guessing Heigl would be…Jenny? No doubt the success of “The Muppets” had something to do with this. Maybe if it’s good, Heigl won’t bad mouth the movie like she did with “Knocked up”.
