Tag Archive: the Matrix

With news that Warner Bros. wants to revisit “The Matrix” hitting recently, speculation has run wild about what a new film would focus on.

Birth.Movies.Death. is reporting that a new Matrix film would center around a young Morpheus, with Michael B. Jordan starring.

Lawrence Fishburne played Morpheus in the original trilogy.

If true, it looks as though WB wants to tell more stories in the film’s universe instead of a straight reboot.

“John Wick” review

Keanu Reeves is back in action mode with “John Wick”. Is this movie worthwhile or a misfire?

The Good

This movie is a blast. Action-lovers will have a lot of fun with the shootouts, and there are plenty. Reeves is in full a@@ kicking mode and there are several set pieces that are some of the best of the year.

There’s a lot of humor in the film as well, which helps keep the film moving along and entertaining. The supporting cast, including Willem Dafoe, Michael Nyqvist, and Adrianne Palicki all do a fine job with their respective roles. And it never takes itself too seriously, which only adds to the film’s enjoyment.

The Bad

Well…realism isn’t exactly this film’s strong suit. And, there are a few confusing choices made with some of the characters that could make a potential sequel a little hard to imagine.

The Final Word

A fun, funny and entertaining ride, “John Wick” is probably my favorite straight-up action film of the year. It’s a blast that is definitely worth checking out.

Bane is “The Outsider”

Tom Hardy, best known for his roles in Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” and “The Dark Knight Rises”, is taking a lead role. Now Bane will play the lead in”The Outsider”, about an American G.I. who becomes a member of the notorious Japanese Yakuza. Joel Silver (“The Matrix”) is producing and the film will be directed by Takashi Miike. Miike will be directing his first English language film after directing films like “Audition” and “13 Assassins”.

Trailer for “Man of Tai Chi”

Here’s the first trailer for Keanu Reeves’ (“The Matrix”) directorial debut “Man of Tai Chi” starring Karen Mok and Iko Uwais.

Reeves is playing the villain in the film and Tiger Hu Chen, who was martial arts trainer for “The Matrix” trilogy, is playing the lead. This looks great! The bad news is it doesn’t have a North American release date yet, hopefully it gets one soon though. The film also reunites Reeves with Yuen Woo-ping, who was action choreographer of the Wachowskis’ trilogy.

Keanu Reeves has largely stayed out of the spotlight aside from making the excellent documentary “Side By Side”. That could be changing. He’ starring in the troubled, upcoming film “47 Ronin”. And now he’s set to star in a new sci fi film from director Brian Kirk (“Game of Thrones”, “Boardwalk Empire”). Jon Spaihts, one of the writers on “Prometheus” is writing the script which is said to center around “a spacecraft transporting thousands of people to a distant colony planet that has a malfunction in one of its sleep chambers. As a result, a single passenger (Reeves) is awakened 90 years before anyone else… He eventually decides to wake up a second passenger, marking the beginning of what becomes a unique love story (From Deadline)”.

Sounds a little bit like “The Lake House”, which he co-starred with Sandra Bullock in that it’s a love story with a sci-fi twist. I realize a lot of people didn’t care for “The Lake House”, but I think that film is underrated. And I have hopes that this one could lead to some interesting moments.

Writer Michael Bacall may not be a huge name, but he should. He wrote “21 Jump Street” and the underrated “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”. But his latest project has me a little skeptical. He will script a remake to “Weird Science”, one of the most celebrated films from the late John Hughes. Joel Silver (“The Matrix”) is producing the film turned TV series that saw two nerds create the perfect woman.

The Wachowskis’ “Jupiter Ascending” has officially begun filming. Starring Channing Tatum (“Magic Mike”), Mila Kunis (“Oz the Great and Powerful”), Sean Bean (“The Lord of the Rings”), Eddie Redmayne (“Les Miserables”), Doona Bae (“Cloud Atlas”) and more, the film’s story is as follows (From comingsoon.net): Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning toilets and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along – her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

I can’t wait for this one. Wachowskis and science fiction will always have my interest. For the record, for those who haven’t seen “Cloud Atlas”, buy the DVD or Blu Ray in May. You won’t regret it.

“Point Break” was an insanely fun film. Starring Patrick Swayze and a pre-Matrix Keanu Reeves, the film was so excessive, it was a lot of fun. Kathryn Bigelow directed that film. Now with news that a “Point Break” remake is happening and unfortunately, it appears to be picking up steam. Reportedly Ericson Core has signed on as director and filming will begin at the end of this year. What has Core directed? Well…he directed the somewhat entertaining “Invincible” starring Mark Wahlberg. He also served as a cinematographer on “DareDevil” and “The Fast and the Furious”.

This film is very much now on my radar screen. William H. Macy (“Fargo”) is making his directorial debut with “Rudderless”, which is a musical drama. Here’s a synopsis from Comingsoon.net: When a grieving father in a downward spiral stumbles across a box of his deceased son’s original music, he forms a band, hoping to find peace in the wake of his tragic loss.

This sounds like it could be very emotional. He’s joined by Billy Crudup (“Big Fish”, “Watchmen”), Anton Yelchin (“Star Trek”), Selena Gomez (“Spring Breakers”), Laurence Fishburne (“The Matrix”) and Felicity Huffman (“Desperate Housewives”).

You know, the Wachowskis are a rare breed of directors. They continue to make fun and unique films unlike anything we’re seeing in cinema today. They ushered in a new era of sci-fi and action films with “The Matrix”. “Speed Racer” was an underrated family film and of course “Cloud Atlas”, the amazing, best film of last year. Now they’re back with “Jupiter Ascending”, which stars Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum and Eddie Redmayne. The big budget sci-fi epic is, from Cinema Blend: a futuristic drama set in a future world where humans have become the lowest species on the intergalactic totem pole.

And now WB is giving it a release date of July 25, 2014. This is significant for a variety of reasons. First, it’s getting a summer release that’s not August. And this is the time of year WB has traditionally released it’s biggest guns of the summer: “The Dark Knight”, “The Dark Knight Rises”, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” and “Inception”. So yeah, they’re putting a lot of faith behind this film. It will have stiff competition. “X-Men: Days of Future Past” is getting released just a week before and Brett Ratner’s “Hercules” starring Dwayne Johnson is opening July 25 as well.
