“Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig has another hit on his hand. “The Heat” starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy opened to $40 million. That’s the biggest opening in Bullock’s career and way ahead of “Bridesmaids”, which opened to just more than $26 million. Disney/Pixar’s “Monsters University, however, repeated in first with an estimated $46.2 million. Despite having big star power in director Roland Emmerich and stars Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum, “White House Down” opened to $25.7 million, lower than “Olympus Has Fallen”, which had Gerard Butler.

The last weekend in June sees the second White House being attacked movie of the year and a delayed buddy cop comedy from the director of “Bridesmaids”.

First up is “White House Down”. “Olympus Has Fallen” starring Gerard Butler earned nearly $100 million earlier this year, a good omen for this film. It has a bigger name director (Roland Emmerich) and much more star power (Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum). But the question remains will audiences pay for a similar movie? Well, sometimes they do. “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon” were released just two months apart, but “Armageddon” actually earned significantly more, despite coming out second. The star power alone will raise “White House Down” up but fans might be getting a little fatigued with action movies right now.

Opening weekend: $38-43 million

The big winner this week looks to be “The Heat”. Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy are both bona fide box office draws. And director Paul Feig’s “Bridesmaids” was the comedy smash hit of 2011. The combination of those factors should help this take second behind “Monsters University”.

Opening weekend: $40-45 million

Keanu Reeves has largely stayed out of the spotlight aside from making the excellent documentary “Side By Side”. That could be changing. He’ starring in the troubled, upcoming film “47 Ronin”. And now he’s set to star in a new sci fi film from director Brian Kirk (“Game of Thrones”, “Boardwalk Empire”). Jon Spaihts, one of the writers on “Prometheus” is writing the script which is said to center around “a spacecraft transporting thousands of people to a distant colony planet that has a malfunction in one of its sleep chambers. As a result, a single passenger (Reeves) is awakened 90 years before anyone else… He eventually decides to wake up a second passenger, marking the beginning of what becomes a unique love story (From Deadline)”.

Sounds a little bit like “The Lake House”, which he co-starred with Sandra Bullock in that it’s a love story with a sci-fi twist. I realize a lot of people didn’t care for “The Lake House”, but I think that film is underrated. And I have hopes that this one could lead to some interesting moments.

But the good news is it’s not getting delayed. Thanks to Fox moving “The Heat” starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy back to a June release, Sony is taking advantage of the open April 5 weekend. “Evil Dead” will now come out on April 5, which is a week earlier than planned. The film is being produced by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell and, if you believe the posters, will be the scariest movie you’ll ever see. For fans, the good news is they’ll find out if that’s true one week sooner.

“The Heat” delayed until June

After being a mere months away from its original April 5 release date, Fox is delaying “The Heat” until June 28. Probably hoping for a “Bridesmaids” type run at the box office, the film will go against “White House Down” and “Kick-Ass 2”. “The Heat” stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.

“Gravity” gets release date

Alfonso Cuaron is a great director. He helmed the third “Harry Potter” film and made one of the best films I’ve ever seen, “Children of Men”. His new film “Gravity” will hit theaters Oct. 4 of this year. The film stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as astronauts who are stranded when their space station becomes damaged by debris.

I have very high hopes for this film. I hope it lives up to them!

Has Fox found its Judd Apatow?

Director Judd Apatow has been quite profitable for Universal, signing a deal with the studio and allowing him to make such R-rated hits like “40-Year-Old Virgin”, “Knocked Up” and most recently “This is 40”. Now Fox may have found its Apatow. Fox has signed a deal with director Paul Feig who directed the hit comedy “Bridesmaids” and the upcoming “The Heat” starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. It’ll be interesting to see of Feig can replicate the success that Apatow has had.

According to Forbes, that title goes to Eddie Murphy. Murphy has had a string of flops, including “A Thousand Words”, “Meet Dave” and “Tower  Heist”. The other names on the list include Katherine Heigl, Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock, Jack Black, Nicolas Cage, Adam Sandler, Denzel Washington, Ben Stiller and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Not a surprising list here. Frankly, I’m glad to see Heigl on this list, since pretty much the only hit she’s been in (“Knocked Up”) she’s made a point of bashing.

Though it still doesn’t have a release date, “Gravity”, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney received a PG-13 rating. The newest film from Alfonso Cuaron will see Bullock playing an astronaut stranded in space trying to get back home to her daughter. The rating makes sense. “Children of Men”, though it was one of the best films I’ve ever seen, flopped.
