This is pretty cool. On July 4 at participating Regal, AMC, Cinemark or Carmike Cinema Theaters, active military and veterans will get in free to “White House Down”. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

“White House Down” stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx and is directed by Roland Emmerich.

“Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig has another hit on his hand. “The Heat” starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy opened to $40 million. That’s the biggest opening in Bullock’s career and way ahead of “Bridesmaids”, which opened to just more than $26 million. Disney/Pixar’s “Monsters University, however, repeated in first with an estimated $46.2 million. Despite having big star power in director Roland Emmerich and stars Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum, “White House Down” opened to $25.7 million, lower than “Olympus Has Fallen”, which had Gerard Butler.

The last weekend in June sees the second White House being attacked movie of the year and a delayed buddy cop comedy from the director of “Bridesmaids”.

First up is “White House Down”. “Olympus Has Fallen” starring Gerard Butler earned nearly $100 million earlier this year, a good omen for this film. It has a bigger name director (Roland Emmerich) and much more star power (Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum). But the question remains will audiences pay for a similar movie? Well, sometimes they do. “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon” were released just two months apart, but “Armageddon” actually earned significantly more, despite coming out second. The star power alone will raise “White House Down” up but fans might be getting a little fatigued with action movies right now.

Opening weekend: $38-43 million

The big winner this week looks to be “The Heat”. Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy are both bona fide box office draws. And director Paul Feig’s “Bridesmaids” was the comedy smash hit of 2011. The combination of those factors should help this take second behind “Monsters University”.

Opening weekend: $40-45 million

Roland Emmerich is busy promoting “White House Down” starring Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum. But you can be sure he’s been asked about “Independence Day 2”, or as it was at one time supposedly called: “ID Forever Parts 1 and 2”, which would take place 20 years after the original (the first sequel is slated for summer 2015). But here comes news that Will Smith (“After Earth”) won’t be involved.

“Will Smith cannot come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name,” Emmerich told the NY Daily News. “It would be too much. We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film [in the script] and the other half people who are new.”

I suppose it sort of makes sense, though you’d think Smith would be more willing to return to these franchises. I mean “Men in Black 3” was his most well-received film in a while.

Pretty soon we’ll be able to settle the debate on who had the best White House being attacked movie of 2013. We already had “Olympus Has Fallen” with Gerard Butler. Now here’s the latest extended trailer for “White House Down”.

From director Roland Emmerich, the film stars Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum.

Here’s the latest trailer for “White House Down”.

From director Roland Emmerich (“Independence Day”, “2012”) the film stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx. I’ll admit, this looks more entertaining than Gerard Butler’s “Olympus Has Fallen”.

Roland Emmerich’s already wreaked havoc on the earth in “Day After Tomorrow” and “2012”. He’s next targeting the White House in “White House Down” starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx and Maggie Gyllenhaal. But, two of Emmerich’s best known films may be getting sequels: “Independence Day” and “Stargate”.

Here’s what he told the Hollywood Reporter about an “ID” sequel: “[C]reatively, for the very first time since we did the original, I feel we have a worthy concept, a worthy path to go,” he says. “…Whether or not we can make this happen, if we can get all the pieces to come together, that’s gonna be challenging.”

Will Smith has shown a willingness to return to hit franchises like “Men in Black”.

And about Stargate: “Stargate has always had this empty hole,” he adds. “When we made the first one, we always intended on doing part two and three, and we were prevented for years. And our hope is that we can get another chance at Stargate and tell the entire story we wanted to tell.”

I was never a huge Stargate fan, but, unless I’m way off base, “Stargate 2” would have to be a prequel wouldn’t it? The TV shows picked up after the movie if I’m not mistaken.

Next 3D re-release announced

Yes, the 3d re-releases keep coming. Up next will be “Independence Day 3D” on July 3rd, 2013. The film starred Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum and Randy Quaid and was directed by Roland Emmerich.

One has to wonder whether how it does will determine if we ever see an “Independence Day 2” or not.

Director Roland Emmerich’s (“2012”) “White House Down”, which is about a paramilitary takeover of the White House, is close to signing Channing Tatum to star.
Tatum’s having himself quite a year starring in “Haywire”, “The Vow” and “21 Jump Street” with “Magic Mike” and “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” still to come. Still don’t think he’s a very good actor, but roles like this one probably play to his strength, be in an action movie where people can forgive some bad acting.

Before you start, no this is not a sequel to “Black Hawk Down”. But, director Roland Emmerich (“Anonymous”, “2012”) is set to direct the upcoming film “White House Down”. No specific plot points have been revealed, but it centers around a para-military takeover of the White House.

Emmerich’s films have always been hit or miss with me. But, this sounds like it could be a fun action-thriller.
