Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight Rises”, “Inception”) is returning to science fiction with “Interstellar”. Now reports are that Casey Affleck (“Gone Baby Gone”) has joined the cast. Great news. Affleck is a great actor. He joins Matthew McConaughey (“Magic Mike”), Anne Hathaway (“Les Miserables”), Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty”), Michael Caine (“Now You See Me”) and Bill Irwin (“Rachel Getting Married”).

To say that Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” was polarizing might be an understatement. People loved it or hated it. Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof wrote the script, but now Fox is apparently courting a new writer for “Prometheus 2”. Jack Paglen is apparently the top choice to write the sequel. The bad news is he has only one screenplay to his credit. The good news is that screenplay is “Transcendence”, the debut from longtime Christopher Nolan collaborator Wally Pfister starring Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany, Cillian Murphy and Morgan Freeman, but he’s still unproven. Do you want to see what happens to Elizabeth (Noomi Rapace) and David (Michael Fassbender)?

The surprises keep coming this summer movie season. “The Purge” defied all expectations, opening to $36.4 million, the film was made for just $3 million. Expect this film to drop off quickly as horror movies tend to be very front loaded, but the movie has a chance to wind up north of $70-80 million total now.

“Fast and Furious 6” and “Now You See Me” each earned just less than $20 million. “FF 6” should pass “Fast Five” by next week to become the highest grossing film in the franchise.

“The Internship” starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn debuted to a disappointing fourth, earning $18.1 million.

We have another surprise at the box office. “Now You See Me” topped “After Earth” starring Will and Jaden Smith at the box office over the weekend. The former earned $28 million, near the high end of expectations for the film from Louis Letterier while the latter from M. Night Shyamalan earned $27 million. “Fast and Furious 6” topped the box office again with $34 million.

Here’s the first four minutes (technically 3:41) of “Now You See Me”.

Looks good to me! The film stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine.

This is good news…I guess. “After Earth” starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith has moved up its release date to May 31, a week earlier than originally planned. Had it stayed at its original weekend it would have faced off against “The Internship” starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. The film now opens the same weekend as “Now You See Me”. The move may have more to do with trying to distance itself away from “Man of Steel”, which opens June 14. But now it’ll face “Fast and Furious 6” and “The Hangover Part III” in those films’ second weekend. Anyways the film from director M. Night Shyamalan could be an interesting film…though when has a Shyamalan film panned out lately?
