This is getting a lot like sorting through the “Star Wars Episode VII” saga, which eventually went to J.J. Abrams. First came news that Nicolas Winding Refn, Christopher Nolan, Ang Lee, Shane Black and Tom Hooper were all in the running for Bond 24, the follow up to “Skyfall” with Daniel Craig. Then came news that Sam Mendes was in talks to return. Now new reports say that Mendes is directing Bond 24 AND Bond 25. That’s the length of Craig’s contract for the record, so maybe this will be Craig’s big finale.

A day after reports came that directors like Shane Black, Ang Lee, Tom Hooper and Nicolas Winding Refn were up to direct “Bond 24” comes news that Sam Mendes IS in talks to return. Mendes directed “Skyfall” starring Daniel Craig as 007/James Bond and Javier Bardem. Apparently they’re willing to wait until Mendes becomes available to direct the film.

Sam Mendes did a great job with “Skyfall” helping Daniel Craig and James Bond reach new heights. With Mendes gone the search is on for a new director. According to reports the list includes Shane Black (“Iron Man 3”) David Yates (“Harry Potter”), Ang Lee (“Life of Pi”) and  Nicolas Winding Refn (“Drive”).

Who would you want to see get the job?

Continuing this morning’s theme of lots of trailing being released, here’s one of the two trailers out for the film “Only God Forgives”.

From Nicolas Winding Refn (“Drive”), the film stars Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas and Vithaya Pansringarm. The movie looks intense, dark and really good. I can’t wait for this one!

This is worse than “Jane Got a Gun”. Paul Higgis and Russell Crowe were once set to direct and star in “The Equalizer”, which is based on an 80s TV series that sees a special ops agent help people. Then Denzel Washington boarded the project. Nicolas Winding Refn (“Drive”) came on board to direct…and left. Then “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” director Rupert Wyatt joined…and left. Now Antoine Fuqua (“Olympus Has Fallen”) is the latest to be attached to it. If he does join, he’ll reteam with Washington for the first time since “Training Day”, which got Washington an Oscar.

Rupert Wyatt finds next project?

Ever since dropping out of “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” because he felt the production schedule was too rushed (Matt Reeves took over), Rupert Wyatt has been looking for his next project. Reports are that he is in talks to direct “The Equalizer”, based on the 80s TV show starring Denzel Washington. This project also saw its old director recently drop out as Nicolas Winding Refn (“Drive”) was attached before leaving. The film is looking to start production in June so chances are we’ll see this deal closed soon.

That being said, another 80s show becoming a movie…really?

Another 1980s TV series is headed to the big screen. This time, Denzel Washington will play Robert “The Equalizer” McCall in “The Equalizer”. Richard Wenk (“Expendables 2”) is writing the script. The film will have a small budget and the studio is looking for directors who can deliver bang on a budget. No official word on who they are considering, but rumors are swirling that Pierre Morel (“Taken”),  Nicolas Winding Refn (“Drive”), Gavin O’Connor (“Warrior”)  and Gareth Evans (“The Raid”) are all up for the job.

“Drive” was one of last year’s most critically acclaimed films and was a modest hit at the box office. Now, a sequel might be in the works. James Sallis has released a follow up book called “Driven” and said that a movie is “in the pipeline”. That, of course, means nothing as to whether a movie will actually get made, but the chance is there. No word on whether Ryan Gosling or director Nicolas Winding Refn would return though they both said they would be interested. Refn said in prior interviews he’d like to feature two drivers, one as a villain counterpart to Gosling’s character.

“Drive” was one of the more popular and critically acclaimed films of last year. Director Nicolas Winding Refn has a history of making some very good films, whether it be “Pusher” or “Bronson”. And you could make a case that both star Ryan Gosling and Refn were snubbed by the Oscars.

Good news or fans is that Refn and Gosling will be working together again on “Only God Forgives” along with Kristin Scott Thomas and Tom Burke. The film is a crime thriller.
