Yep. “Bad Teacher 2” is coming. Jake Kasdan, who directed the underwhelming original, is back. Cameron Diaz, Jason Segal and Justin Timberlake are also expected to return. The first one made more than $200 million worldwide, but I found it to be quite disappointing. That and the film really seemed like a stand alone film, so I’m not sure where you take the sequel from here. But, whether we want it or not, get ready.

This is getting confusing. “The Muppets…Again!” won’t have Amy Adams or Jason Segal involved. It does star Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, Tina Fey and Ray Liotta (?) are in. Christoph Waltz was in, but then was replaced. Turns our Gervais revealed that Waltz will still appear in the film. That’s good news, even if it’s just a cameo, but the casting news is getting as confusing as “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”.

Muppets sequel gets a title!

“The Muppets” was really one of my favorite films of 2011. It was funny, charming and Jason Segal and Amy Adams were great. They’re not returning, but Kermit, Miss Piggy and company are in the newly titled “The Muppets…Again!”

The sequel stars Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey, Ty Burrell and James Bobin returning to direct. Also, more good news, Flight of the Conchords’ Bret McKenzie is returning to write some of the songs. He won an Oscar for “Man or Muppet”.

“The Muppets” starring Jason Segal and Amy Adams was one of my favorite films of 2011. But for “The Muppets 2” we’re getting a new cast of humans to join Kermit, Miss Piggy and company. Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and Ty Burrell have already signed on. And now an actor who appeared in “Muppets in Space” is coming back. Ray Liotta. Yep. So this past week Liotta has joined a children’s movie and “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”. Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum!

“The Muppets”, which starred Jason Segal and Amy Adams in the human roles along side Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog and company was one of the pleasant surprises in 2011. Now, the sequel appears to be grabbing some top notch talent. Ty Burrell is playing an inspector and Ricky Gervais is playing one of the leads. Tina Fey is joining the sequel in the female lead, playing a Russian gulag prison guard.

“The Muppets” was a big surprise for me. Starring Jason Segal, Amy Adams, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and company it was a great film. Then news came that Segal wouldn’t return and that Christoph Waltz had left the sequel. But now that Ty Burrell is on board and news that Ricky Gervais is joining makes me a whole lot more confident in the film again. Gervais is extremely funny and I think he can bring a new brand of humor as well.

The final weekend before the summer movie begins is upon us. Four new movies hit theaters, none of which people will probably remember after this week, but they’ve got one chance to make a mark.

This will come down to a battle between “The Raven” from director James McTeigue (“V for Vendetta”) and starring John Cusack and “The Five-Year Engagement” starring Jason Segal and Emily Blunt.

Normally, a film like “The Raven” would win and it has had a pretty strong marketing campaign. But, the reviews have been less than stellar and its main target audience, young males, will probably be tempted to just wait to go see “The Avengers” instead. The film’s been marketed as a Sherlock Holmes-ish type thriller with Edgar Allen Poe but it should open around $18-20 million.

Opening weekend: $18-20 million

Total box office gross: $35-40 million

“The Five-Year Engagement” has the popular Segal in it. And the premise sounds funny for a romantic comedy. However, its audience will still be split from “Think Like A Man” and “The Lucky One”. So an opening around $17-19 million should happen.

Opening weekend: $17-19 million

Total box office gross: $38-43 million

The other two movies this weekend are going to tank. The first is “Safe” starring Jason Statham. I’m always good for an action film with Statham. However, there’s been little marketing for the film and it has a very straight to DVD feel to it. An opening of $9-11 million.

Opening weekend: $9-11 million

Total box office gross: $25-30 million

Finally there’s “Pirates! Band of Misfits”. All I can say is I don’t know any families, children or older audiences who want to see the film. The humor just looks too offbeat for mainstream audiences.

Opening weekend: $7-9 million

Total box office gross: $18-23 million

“Muppets” sequel is coming!

“The Muppets” was one of the pleasant surprises of 2011. The film had the right mix of self deprecation, heart and classic muppet antics. It won an Oscar for Best Song and was financially successful. So, it’s no surprise that a sequel is on the way. And, writer Nicholas Stoller and director James Bobin are set to return. The bad news? Jason Segal’s involvement is not a given. Segal is unable to be involved in preproduction because of prior commitments and no word on whether he’ll return.

There is also no word whether Amy Adams or any of the other live actors will come back.

Do you think Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and the gang need Segal for a sequel?
