Sorry guys got caught up at work yesterday. But I’m back and here’s the latest trailer for “The Great Gatsby”.

“The Great Gatsby” will open the Cannes Film Festival on May 15. Which is surprising because Cannes rarely chooses films that are already out, and the film is being released nationwide on May 10. But it’s a chance to get Baz Luhrmann and company to show up. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher and Jason Clarke.

Here we go. The first is that Matt Reeves’ “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” is picking up a lot of steam. Jason Clarke joined the anticipated sequel and Andy Serkis is of course returning as Caesar. Now news comes that Gary Oldman is joining the cast as well. He was last in “Lawless” and “The Dark Knight Rises”.

The other film to pick up steam lately is “Transcendence” from long time Christopher Nolan collaborator Wally Pfister. The film already will star Johnny Depp and now Paul Bettany is joining him. “Priest” aside, Bettany is a talented actor, appearing in films such as “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World”, “A Beautiful Mind” and is the voice of Jarvis in the Iron Man films and “The Avengers”. Both projects sound very promising!

Jason Clarke: rising star?

This looks like a good time to be Jason Clarke. He had supporting roles in “Lawless” and “Zero Dark Thirty”. He can be seen in the upcoming films “White House Down” and “The Great Gatsby”. Now he is joining Chris Hemsworth in “Candy Store”, a new crime thriller which was written and will be directed by Stephen Gaghan (“Traffic”). He also has a leading role in “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”. Looks like he’s going to get his shot to become a Hollywood A-lister.

“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”, which starred James Franco, Andy Serkis and Freida Pinto, was a surprise hit in 2011. Then its director left. Then Matt Reeves (“Cloverfield”) signed on. Now comes news that Jason Clarke (“Zero Dark Thirty”) has signed on for a major role. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel is set fifteen years after the events of Rise and finds most of humanity wiped out and the intelligent apes ruling over the world. Part of the film’s focus is said to be on a small group of San Francisco-based scientists that are forming a resistance against the apes and part follows Andy Serkis’ Caesar as he, like his namesake, tries to maintain order and power within his new civilization.

Reeves also directed the very good “Let Me In”, so I’m excited for this one.

It wasn’t so long ago that director Baz Luhrmann’s lavish adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” was set to be released now. But now it’s been delayed until next summer. Here’s a new trailer to help tide you over.

Screenwriter William Monahan wrote one of my favorite films bar none, “The Departed”. He also wrote “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” and the upcoming “Oblivion”. Now he’s getting a chance to write and direct “Mojave”, a thriller which, from FirstShowing.net:

“The story involves a man who escapes into the desert and finds a “doppelganger-like antagonist” and gets caught in an intense whirlwind of violence and crime. In our modern culture the phrase “doppelganger” is used to mean “lookalike,” but its folklore origins often associate it as being a paranormal double of someone else”

Jason Clarke (“Zero Dark Thirty”) and Oscar Isaac (“The Bourne Legacy”) will play the leads.

One more Lincoln Biopic on its way

So, we’ve seen Abe battle vampires in “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”. And We have Oscar bait with Daniel Day-Lewis and Steven Spielberg bringing us “Lincoln”. Now, get ready for “The Green Blade Rises” which will focus on Lincoln’s younger years. AJ Edwards, who has worked with Terrence Malick on multiple films, including “The Tree of Life” will direct and write the script. No one has been announced to play Lincoln, but Wes Bentley (“The Hunger Games”, “Ghost Rider”), Brit Marling, Diane Kruger and Jason Clarke will each play one of Lincoln’s biggest role models.

I’m not sure where this obsession with Lincoln came from, but I somehow doubt this will be as good as “Lincoln”.
