Arnold takes on Mark Wahlberg and a Mama for box office supremacy. Will they unseat “Zero Dark Thirty”?

“The Last Stand” stars  Arnold Schwarzenegger, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville, Rodrigo Santoro, Jaimie Alexander and more in Arnold’s return to starring in an action film. This will be a big movie for Arnold as he needs to prove that he still has fans who will come out to see his films in full force. This one looks, to be frank, a bit stupid. And with Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone coming out with movies as well as an already crowded market-place with movies aimed at younger guys, this one will have a tough time breaking out over the holiday weekend.

Opening weekend: $12-14 million

On paper, this should be a massive hit. Mark Wahlberg, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Russell Crowe in a crime film. Yet “Broken City” just doesn’t seem to have a lot of buzz going into the weekend. It provides a different option for audiences if they don’t want to see a horror film or straight-up action flick. The studio is clearly hoping to draw in the crowd that saw “Contraband” last year, but with so much competition and lukewarm reviews at best, this one won’t be a hit.

Opening weekend: $13-15 million

Presented by Guillermo del Toro, “Mama” should win the weekend. For whatever reason, horror films have done well in January. This one will do pretty well if nothing else, because it’s premise is going for genuine horror instead of the slasher flick. It might taper off quickly, but expect this one to take the top spot this weekend.

Opening weekend: $20-22 million
