“The Expendables 3” already added Wesley Snipes, Nicolas Cage, Jackie Chan and Milla Jovovich. Now Sylvester Stallone said that Mel Gibson is close to joining the film to play the villain. Presumably he’d join previous cast members  Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews, Jason Statham and Jet Li.

“The Expendables 3” added some big names today. Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes, Nicolas Cage and Milla Jovovich are in negotiations to join the action franchise. The second film starred Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Nan Yu, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Liam Hemsworth, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

This is a little surprising. “Kung Fu Panda 2” was a disappointment at the box office. But that isn’t stopping DreamWorks from moving up “Kung Fu Panda 3” to Dec. 23, 2015. Original voice cast Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu and David Cross are expected to be back. And now reports are that Bryan Cranston, Mads Mikkelsen and Rebel Wilson are joining them. The second film’s director is back, which worries me. The second film played out like a less funny rehash of the first film, kind of like “The Hangover Part II”.

Sylvester Stallone is giving an update on’ The Expendables 3″, saying he’s writing the script now. He says there will be “new blood” ages 22-27 and some women who aren’t sex symbols, but “real”. No surprise he’s working on the script. Stallone, Arnold, Jason Statham and Bruce Willis all bombed this year with “Bullet to the Head”, “The Last Stand”, “Parker” and “A Good Day to Die Hard”. Jackie Chan is in talks to join the cast.

Who should some of the new blood be? I realize these actors aren’t in their 20s, but I’d probably say Vin Diesel, Mark Wahlberg, Jeremy Renner, Gina Carano, Michelle Rodriguez and maybe someone like a Tom Hardy or (this would be ironic) Chris Hemsworth.

While doing press for his latest film “CZ12”, Jackie Chan spilled the beans on two future projects. The first is “Expendables 3” which he has joined apparently on the condition that he will have a bigger role than just a glorified cameo. Also, he said that he and Chris Tucker are considering a script called “Skip Tracer” but that Chan said he believes it should become “Rush Hour 4”.

“Rush Hour 3” wasn’t exactly a box office smash or a critical darling. Director Brett Ratner and stars Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan returned, but to many, it lacked the charm of the original “Rush Hour”. Now, franchise producer Arthur Sarkissian said “Rush Hour 4” is happening and is looking to “Fast Five” for inspiration on how to keep the series fresh:

“One of the things that surprised me and actually excited me was how they did Fast Five. They kept the characters, they took them and they put them in a whole different world. They put them in the world of a heist movie and it worked. I think that was brilliant [because] if you’re not careful, what happens is you just keep repeating yourself. There’s not much you can do,” Sarkissian told Crave Online.

I enjoyed “Fast Five”, but if you’re looking to that film for creative inspiration, you might just want to let the series continue to rest.

Jackie Chan announced today that he is retiring from action films.

“The world is too violent right now,” Chan said at the Cannes Film Festival. “It’s a dilemma — I love fighting. I like action. but I don’t like violence.”

He also said that his age played a factor as well. It’s too bad. His action always had a light hearted aspect to it that was refreshing in a world dominated by having violence for the sake of having violence. His upcoming film “Chinese Zodiac” will be his last action film.
