“The Muppets” was a big surprise for me. Starring Jason Segal, Amy Adams, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and company it was a great film. Then news came that Segal wouldn’t return and that Christoph Waltz had left the sequel. But now that Ty Burrell is on board and news that Ricky Gervais is joining makes me a whole lot more confident in the film again. Gervais is extremely funny and I think he can bring a new brand of humor as well.

“Django Unchained” hasn’t been released yet, but it’s never too early to start guessing what Quentin Tarantino’s next film will be. Could a gangster movie be in his future?

“I could conceive maybe someday doing a 30′s gangster picture, or something like that,” Tarantino said. “I could think of doing another Western, actually,” Tarantino told a crowd after screening his film.

Obviously seems like he’s throwing around ideas. There’s also all those long rumored “Kill Bill” follow ups. But gangster movies sort of glorify violence and are usually about revenge, two things Tarantino does very well, so it could be a fun twist to see him do one.

Good news for the Muppets sequel

“The Muppets” was the most pleasant surprise from last year, earning critical acclaim, becoming successful at the box office and winning an Oscar. Now, after Jason Segal opted not to return for “The Muppets 2”, some bit of good news.  James Bobin and screenwriter Nicholas Stoller are back. Christoph Waltz will co-star with Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest of the gang. And now, Bret McKenzie , from Flight of the Conchords will write the songs again!

It looks like Segal is the only major player who isn’t returning.

“Inglourious Basterds”, Quentin Tarantino’s last film, was both a hit commercially and critically. Now, he returns with “Django Unchained”, starring Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and more. Are the two connected? There have already been connections to the world of Basterds to some of Tarantino’s other films. Here’s an interesting quote he told Total Film:

Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained bespeak a trilogy. As different as they are, there is a companion piece quality. There might very well be a third one. I just don’t know what it is yet.”

Hm. Sounds interesting doesn’t it? Tarantino said he’d always wanted to do a gangster film. He also said he’d like to return to Kill Bill after 10 years, which would be in 2014.

Wally Pfister, Christopher Nolan’s go-to cinematographer since “Memento” is prepping his first directorial film with “Transcendence”. Reportedly, he’s going after Noomi Rapace, James McAvoy, Tobey Maguire and Christoph Waltz. But, the real winner here is Johnny Depp who is being offered $20 million or 15 percent of the grosses, whichever ends up being bigger.

David Thewlis, who is best known for playing Lupin in the Harry Potter films, has joined the Terry Gilliam film “Zero Theorem”. The film, according to cinemablend.com, “takes place in an “Orwellian corporate world” where an executive known as Management relies on spy devices dubbed “mancams” to keep track of his various employees.”

The film is also set to star Christoph Waltz (“Inglourious Basterds”) and Tilda Swinton. This sounds like a great cast to me. Thewlis has also had roles in other good films like the emotional “The Boy in Striped Pajamas” and last year’s “War Horse”.

It would have been an interesting battle to watch on Christmas Day, but no longer will Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” and Baz Lurhmann’s “The Great Gatsby” go head to head. The latter has been delayed until summer 2013, with WB stating will be the perfect summer movie around the world. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher, Joel Edgerton and Toby Maguire. “Django Unchained” also stars DiCaprio along with Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz and Kerry Washington.

Makes me wonder why WB isn’t confident enough to keep its release date. Anyways, it’s the second big film of the year to be pushed back pretty close to its release date.

Gainey, Don Johnson, Kerry Washington, Anthony LaPaglia, RZA, Tom Wopat, James Remar, James Russo and Todd Allen in the film.
