Critics may not have been in love with the film, but the Jackie Robinson biopic “42” performed well. The film opened at No. 1 earning $27.7 million, by far the highest opening for a baseball movie. And it received an A+ score from audiences, meaning it could have great legs. The film stars Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford, Nicole Beharie, Christopher Meloni, Andre Holland, Lucas Black, Hamish Linklater, Ryan Merriman and T.R. Knight,

“Scary Movie V” opened in second place with less than half the opening weekend of “Scary Movie 4”. Despite featuring Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan, the film opened to $15 million, even lower than Marlon Wayans “A Haunted House”.

A week after “Evil Dead” comes the return of the horror spoof comedy that started it all, “Scary Movie V”. And just in time for baseball season comes “42”. Which will come out on top?

Back in 2000, “Scary Movie” surprised a lot of people grossing more than $150 million. Fast forward to 2013 and spoof movies…frankly are worse in quality and, for studios, worse in box office receipts. Marlon Wayans (Formerly from the Scary Movie franchise) saw “A Haunted House” open to $18 million and finish with $40 million. “Scary Movie 5” has seen franchise vets like Anna Faris move on but Simon Rex is back and Ashley Tisdale is joining him. Plus there’s those appearances from Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan. Still, it’s tough to see this faring any better.

Opening weekend: $15-20 million

I’m surprised its being released now, but “42”, the story of Jackie Robinson hits theaters as well. It has Oscar bait written all over it, though reviews haven’t been that enthusiastic. “Moneyball”, which starred Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, was very successful, opening to $19 million on its way to more than $75 million. But that was in the height of Oscar season. I’m not sure people will flock to see this one. Harrison Ford has been heavily prominent in marketing, but let’s face it, other than the universally hated “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, what’s the last hit he’s had?

Opening weekend: $10-15 million

Well, I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised. Lindsay Lohan will appear on Charlie Sheen’s TV series “Anger Management”. The appearance is to cross promote for the upcoming film “Scary Movie 5” which also has the pair appearing in the film. The series currently airs Thursdays on FX and co-stars Selma Blair, Shawnee Smith, Daniela Bobadilla, Barry Corbin, Michael Arden, Derek Richardson and Noureen DeWulf.

As I’m STILL waiting for “Sin City: A Dame to Kill for”, Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete Kills” will hit theaters on Sept. 13. Danny Trejo returns where he must stop a revolutionary and an eccentric arms dealer.

The film also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demian Bichir, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding, Jr., William Sadler, Marko Zaror and Mel Gibson.

Director Robert Rodriguez is already busy with “Machete Kills” starring  Danny Trejo, Mel Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara, Zoe Saldana, Charlie Sheen, Alexa Vega, Lady Gaga and Vanessa Hudgens. But, he’s also got another sequel in the works: “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”. In a recent interview, Rodriguez said the new film will be closer to the source material, but also have some new surprises. He also said to expect some casting news soon. Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke and Rosario Dawson have been confirmed to return.

A big question will be how they address Michael Clark Duncan’s character. Duncan’s character plays a big role in the story so we’ll have to watch closely to see how they handle this.

In the same interview, Rodriguez also seemed less enthusiastic about a “Predators” sequel. That’s probably a good thing.

Oh Terry Crews. From “The Expendables” to plans to coming back to “The Newsroom” in season 2 and now you join this? Crews has joined the cast of “Scary Movie 5” which has the … um … “star” studded cast of Ashley Tisdale, Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen.  What are you thinking?

Yes, Lady Gaga is in the sequel to “Machete”, “Machete Kills”. Here’s a teaser poster.

Director Robert Rodriguez tweeted this: “I just finished working with @LadyGaga on @MacheteKills, she kicked SO MUCH ASS! Holy Smokes. Blown away!”

Ex-federale Machete (Danny Trejo) is recruited by the U.S. government to stop an arms dealer (Mel Gibson) from launching a deadly missile in the sequel.

Michelle Rodrigeuz, Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara, Zoe Saldana and Charlie Sheen also star.

Yes, Charlie Sheen is looking to continue his comeback. He’s already starring in a new TV show “Anger Management” and has now been cast as the President in the upcoming “Machete Kills”.

The film also stars Mel Gibson as an arms dealer looking to launch a weapon into space. Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Amber Heard, Sofía Vergara and Demián Bichir also star.

I’d still rather see Robert Rodriguez work on the “Sin City” sequel, but oh well. If you’re going to do a B movie, the cast can’t get much better than this I suppose.
