“Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig has another hit on his hand. “The Heat” starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy opened to $40 million. That’s the biggest opening in Bullock’s career and way ahead of “Bridesmaids”, which opened to just more than $26 million. Disney/Pixar’s “Monsters University, however, repeated in first with an estimated $46.2 million. Despite having big star power in director Roland Emmerich and stars Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum, “White House Down” opened to $25.7 million, lower than “Olympus Has Fallen”, which had Gerard Butler.

The last weekend in June sees the second White House being attacked movie of the year and a delayed buddy cop comedy from the director of “Bridesmaids”.

First up is “White House Down”. “Olympus Has Fallen” starring Gerard Butler earned nearly $100 million earlier this year, a good omen for this film. It has a bigger name director (Roland Emmerich) and much more star power (Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum). But the question remains will audiences pay for a similar movie? Well, sometimes they do. “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon” were released just two months apart, but “Armageddon” actually earned significantly more, despite coming out second. The star power alone will raise “White House Down” up but fans might be getting a little fatigued with action movies right now.

Opening weekend: $38-43 million

The big winner this week looks to be “The Heat”. Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy are both bona fide box office draws. And director Paul Feig’s “Bridesmaids” was the comedy smash hit of 2011. The combination of those factors should help this take second behind “Monsters University”.

Opening weekend: $40-45 million

Rose Byrne (“Bridesmaids”) and Jason Sudeikis (“Horrible Bosses”) are set to star in the romantic comedy “Tumbledown”. From Comingsoon.net, the story follows a romance between a just-widowed woman (Byrne) and a reporter (Sudeikis), who has arrived in her small Maine town to investigate the death of her folk musician husband.

Sean Mewshaw is making his directorial debut. This sounds slightly dark for a romantic comedy, but I’m sure they’ll take a light hearted approach. This is a pair of solid leads so let’s hope they can get a few more good comedic actors to join the mix.

“Tammy” adds two new names

“Tammy”, a film about an overweight woman who is fired from her job, discovers her husband is having an affair and goes on a road trip with her alcoholic, foul-mouthed, diabetic grandmother, has added two new cast members. Already, the film is set to star “Bridesmaids” star Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone. Now Susan Sarandon (“Cloud Atlas”) and Mark Duplass have joined the film as well.

I’m not completely sold on this film. Road trip films tend to be either very funny or terrible to me, so we’ll see how this one turns out.

Bridesmaids star in Thor?

Yeah. This is kinda surprising, but could also be quite amusing. “Thor: Dark World” sees Chris Hemsworth return as Thor. Now “Bridesmaids” star Chris O’Dowd says he’s in “Thor”. Yeah. He filmed a cameo for the film. Not sure how he’d fit in, but hopefully it’s humorous. The film also stars Natalie Portman, Katt Dennings, Christopher Eccleston and Anthony Hopkins.

In recent history, it’s tough to find a Christmas movie that stands out. “Elf” certainly has become a modern classic. But other than that, films have tried but failed. Now “A Friggin’ Christmas Miracle” looks to break that trend. Before you write it off because of the title, let me try and sell it to you. It stars Joel McHale (“Community”), Robin Williams, Wendi McLonden-Covey (“Bridesmaids”), Amara Miller (The younger daughter in “The Descendants”) and more. Phil Johnston, the writer of “Wreck-It Ralph” is penning the script. There’s a lot of talent here, let’s hope this turns out well.

Reports are out that John C. Reilly is joining Will Ferrell in “Anchorman: The Legend Continues”. The pair of actors previously worked with director Adam McKay on “Step Brothers”. They join Kristen Wiig (“Bridesmaids”), James Marsden and Terrence Stamp.

Looks like we have our first hit of 2013. “Identity Thief” opened strongly with $36 million, the first R-rated comedy to open over $20 million since last year’s “Ted”. The film, which starred Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy opened higher than director Seth Gordon’s previous highs (“Four Christmases” at $31 million and “Horrible Bosses” at $28 million) and much higher than McCarthy’s “Bridesmaids”, which opened with $26 million. All three of those films earned at least $117 million, meaning this film is well positioned to earn at least $100 million.

“Warm Bodies” fell to second. That left Steven Soderbergh’s “Side Effects” to open in third with $10 million. The film, which stars Channing Tatum, Rooney Mara, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Jude Law had a disappointing opening that was less than half of what “Contagion” opened with.

The last time A Saturday Night Live writer teamed with director Jason Moore we got Anna Kendrick in “Pitch Perfect”. So now Moore is teaming up with another SNL writer for “The Nest” starring Tina Fey. The film will follow  two thirtysomething sisters come home to find their parents’ house has been put up for sale, so they decide to spend one more wild weekend together there, bonding, feuding and finally growing up.

The second sister hasn’t been cast. Which makes you wonder. The obvious choice would be Amy Poehler right? But Kristen Wiig has seen her stock rise thanks to “Bridesmaids”. Could we get another SNL vet, one we’re not expecting? Either way this sounds like it has the makings of a very funny film.

“The Heat” delayed until June

After being a mere months away from its original April 5 release date, Fox is delaying “The Heat” until June 28. Probably hoping for a “Bridesmaids” type run at the box office, the film will go against “White House Down” and “Kick-Ass 2”. “The Heat” stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.
