It’s generally considered the “Citizen Kane” of graphic novels. It was listed as one of TIME’s 100 Best English language novels since 1923. When Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons created “Watchmen” it was a game changer. I studied it in my English class in college for goodness sake. The movie, directed by Zack Snyder was polarizing. This news will likely be even more polarizing.

DC Comics is going through with a series of prequels to “Watchmen”. That’s right.

Titled “Before Watchmen” the announced books are “Rorschach”, “Minutemen”, “Comedian”, “Dr. Manhattan”, “Nite Owl”, “Ozymandias” and “Silk Spectre”.

You can see some of the covers here.

Dave Gibbons sort of gave his blessing for the project. Alan Moore did not. Neither is directly involved with the project.

For me, this isn’t going to turn out well. Sure, some fans will be excited. But, I think “Watchmen” explained enough of all the characters’ back stories. We don’t need these. The fact that DC is going back to a graphic novel from the 80s proves its in a desperate situation. To me, there will always be one “Watchmen”. Just like almost no one remembers “Caddyshack II” only the original, “Watchmen” will continue to be the “Citizen Kane” of graphic novels and one of the best novels I’ve ever read. The new stuff…is just a company trying to cash in.
