It’s an obvious  trend here. Thanks to the smashing success of Disney’s re-releases of “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast” more studios have taken a cue. This weekend sees George Lucas and “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” hit theaters in 3D. Later this year, James Cameron’s “Titanic” is also coming back to the big screen in three dimensions (Even though Cameron has stated before people should never do 3D conversions).

Pixar is also joining the game. “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2″ were already released. And “Finding Nemo” is coming this fall. Is this a good trend?

It’s funny, because I hear people (myself included) loved to see “The Lion King” back on the big screen. It was nostalgia. One of my favorite movies of all time. And, it was a chance for a new generation of kids to see it. Yet, when it comes to “Star Wars” and “Titanic” it’s much more love it or hate it.

Frankly, I’m not a fan of this trend.  I’ve contributed to the problem by seeing “The Lion King” in 3D, but it does make me wince a little bit that Hollywood has us in a place where we’re willing to pay extra to see a movie more than a decade old. Whether 3D sticks around or not remains to be seen. However, I don’t like this at all. For people like me, who are on a pretty tight budget but love the movies, movie ticket prices threaten to make us skip the movies altogether. To wait to rent them. I recently bought a movie ticket that cost me $11 dollars. My friend, a college student tried to get a student discount, but the theater doesn’t honor that if its the weekends or holidays.

Because you know so many students love to go to a movie in the middle of a school week. This isn’t me complaining because I can’t budget. I’ve cut out largely going out to eat, to doing activities that cost money that aren’t necessary. To loading up on fruit, cereal and ramen noodles until I can get on my feet. I am a frugal person.  get the appeal of 3D for some. And, in a film like “Avatar” and “Hugo”, I thought it was great. But, I wish…no I need it to stop. Not just because I find it generally annoying. But, because it threatens to end my movie-going experience. And for someone who loves movies as much as I do, that’s something I can’t do without.
